Book #4: Hear the Wind Sing by Haruki Murakami

Indonesian Translation of Hear the Wind Sing

This is my second Murakami's book after Kafka in the Shore. Different from the previous, it made me thinking less. Instead, this very first writing of Murakami made realize something.

I wasn't sure what Murakami wanted to say in this book. But let me, as a reader, interpret it in my way.

The story set in Japan told about a university student having summer vacation in his hometown. He met his old friend and spent his days in a bar. He met a girl too.

The story seemed has no conflict. It's just flowing without any surprising plot. Yet, it's a nice story that showed me one point of living:
stay simple.

'I' in the story was a non-complicated and non-curious person. He didn't want to know reason of everything. Explanations and excuses were not interesting for him. He only knew what he wanted and that's what he did in the whole story.

From his perspective on seeing the world (influenced by his character as well), 'I' showed that life is simple. Don't complicate it.

You lied to me? Fine. I don't want to know the reason. Keep it for yourself.
You want to drink? Let's go get some beers.
You don't want to sleep with me? It's okay, just don't worry.
We just hit the car and destroy it! Well... better buy beers instead! haha

Simple.

And it reminded me of this saying:
Missing somebody? Call. Wanna meet up? Invite. Wanna be understood? Explain. Have questions? Ask. Don’t like something? Say it. Like something? State it. Want something? Ask for it. Love someone? Tell them.

Just like Kafka on the Shore, Murakami gave something that I didn't expected. I could not guess where he was bringing me in his his story. Yes, the story was a little bit flat but still I couldn't stop myself from reading it (finished in less than an hour). Plus, he wasn't so obvious about love scenes (and I loooove that!).

My score for this one is 4 out of 5.
Time to look for his other work ;)

  1. ah. murakami. that ojisan.

gue juga awalnya gitu baca kumpulan cerpen doi yang judulnya "blind willow, sleeping woman" - beberapa cerpen bener2 pendek, berasa gak jelas apa yang mau disampaikan, apa plotnya, kenapa si karakter begini/begitu.

    tapi.
    tapi.

you asked how to write some awesumsauce shiz in english, yeah? keep it simple. murakami has been doing that for decades. WE CAN DO IT 2!!1!
